  • Simon Berger Solo Show “ECHOES” | Miami Art Week 2023

Fabien Castanier Gallery is proud to present, “ECHOES“, a solo exhibition for contemporary Swiss artist, Simon Berger. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with Laurent Marthaler Contemporary and consists of a curated selection of Berger’s signature portrait works. The artist brings to life visions of striking faces, emerging from panes of glass that he has meticulously broken and manipulated. By crafting such realism within the constraints of a traditionally fragile medium, the artist presents us with a truly unique form of expression.

    Preview | Sunday, Dec. 3rd @ 11am-4pm
Opening Reception with the Artist | Thursday, Dec 7th @ 6-10pm

Simon Berger (b. 1976, Switzerland) began his artistic endeavors by experimenting with different materials. Working with spray paint, wood, and other discarded items, he found an interest in used vehicle bodies to create assemblages. After working with one car’s windshield, he discovered a fascination with glass. Formally trained as a carpenter, Berger applied his knowledge of raw materials to create pieces that belie their delicate medium. He uses a hammer directly onto the surface of safety glass and the shattered material turns white in various degrees from this process. Emerging from the once transparent plane are arresting faces in high contrast. As they appear from the shadows, their expressions are intense or contemplative – illusions of ephemeral beauty that suggest an on-going struggle between the everlasting desire for ideal form and the deconstructive nature of time.

  • Carlos Jorge First Solo Show in Miami

Fabien Castanier Gallery is proud to present “Selenophilia”, a solo exhibition for contemporary Mexican artist Carlos Jorge. This will be the first solo show for the artist at the gallery. Jorge will present new paintings on canvas and drawings, as well as accompanying sculptures. His large-scale works explore the limits of form, as he utilizes symbols from art history to create visions of a multi-layered world with a singularly unique perspective.

“Selenophilia”, from the Greek meaning to love the moon, captures a contemporary surrealism, in which the moon plays protagonist. Rising within his compositions, the celestial body accompanies other symbols and signs that represent an abstraction of memory. Jorge employs vibrant color and masterful use of texture to highlight his visual references. Modern fashion collides with direct samples emblematic of art history’s greats. Accompanying each painting is a sculpture that acts as counterpoint to the canvas. Opening up his pieces to three-dimensions with sculptural representations of his shoes and hats, Jorge broadens the scope of the dialogue created within the painting’s space, encouraging a new and more dynamic perspective.

OPENING RECEPTION WITH THE ARTIST | SATURDAY, MAY 6th @ 6-9PM

  • JonOne’s New Solo Show

Fabien Castanier Gallery is excited to present a solo exhibition for contemporary artist JonOne. This will be the sixth dedicated show for the artist, a monumental and significant exploration of his global legacy. New paintings and installation capture the essence of an artist whose work has influenced a generation of image-makers and who continues to push boundaries with his creative vision.

Join the Artist, Saturday April 1st from 6-9pm for the opening reception of the show.

Accompanying his new works on canvas, JonOne will complete a large-scale mural on the exterior of the Fabien Castanier Gallery space. Spanning 124 ft. (39m), the mural is an extension of the exhibition – a reminder of the foundation of his oeuvre and the roots of his storied evolution. From graffiti to gallery, JonOne exudes the grand journey of the contemporary urban artist. Forging his own path, his collection of newest pieces brings forth an energy that reflects his identity not only as a painter but as an individual in an ever-changing world.

JonOne’s work is a lens into a complex and vibrant world. He presents emotions through movement and color that act as a catalyst for self-reflection. An innovative dissection of composition and gesture is displayed within his abstract expressionism, and with relative ease the artist can conjure moments of joy and sorrow within a simple frenetic brush stroke. His command of color is triumphant yet subtle, as he plays with alternative palettes and bright shifts in pigment that appear exciting and harmonious to the eye. His work, as always, is approachable by definition – never pretentious or exclusionary. Paintings that are universal and enduring preside as they inspire creativity and expression within us all.

  • Cameroonian Artist Group Exhibition

Fabien Castanier Gallery is proud to present a group exhibition in collaboration with gallery owner and curator Sten Kadji, featuring work from five burgeoning contemporary artists from the west-central African country of Cameroon. Continuing our gallery’s program of cultivating international artists and introducing them to new audiences, this exhibition strives to highlight the ever-growing and prolific art scene of Cameroon. A new creative era has emerged in the country, with young artists exploring identity and cultural self-determination for a flourishing art market. What began in the 1990s with the establishment of seminal art institutions that provided visibility and community to artists, soon evolved into a dynamic and vibrant scene of image makers who bridge the gap between generations, urban and rural, past and future. With the expansion of artistic and cultural spaces across Africa, contemporary artists now hope to represent the fundamental diversity found within not only the continent but each country and region

The five artists in Tales from Home, who originate from different parts of Cameroon, bring their unique perspectives together with work that portrays the world through their individual lenses. Themes of identity, community, social strife, and personal expression, weave in and out of the paintings in this exhibition. With a masterful sense of time and place, the artists convey a rich and vibrant tableau of contemporary Cameroonian culture and its various regional distinctions.

Tales from Home features work from

    JOURDAN TCHOFFO
    MARIE FRANCINE DONGMO
    MOUSTAPHA BAIDI OUMAROU
    SAMUEL DALLÉ

  • Mark Jenkins Returns to Miami

Fabien Castanier Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition for American artist Mark JenkinsThe Harder They Come is on view March 26 through April 23. This is the third solo exhibition for Mark Jenkins at the Castanier Gallery, featuring a new collection of his signature sculptures and installations.

Join the artist for the opening reception, Saturday March 26th from 5-8pm.

Mark Jenkins’ sculptures continue to confront viewers with reality-bending immersion that for this exhibition shines a spotlight on the struggles of oppression and societal imbalance within the current global political climate. Tableaus that are at times imaginatively witty or dark and poignant, reflect a deeper understanding of the theatricality of life. The artist creates these hyper-realistic figures from casting the bodies of real people, more often than not from himself. By taking the realism of a life-size human sculpture and adorning it with absurdity, Jenkins exhibits an exploration of the surreal. The viewer’s reaction to the sculptures become part of the pieces – as the artist seeks to envelop the audience within the installation, holding a mirror up to the complexities of human connection and the collective unrest born from oppressive circumstances.

  • RERO’s Fifth Solo Exhibition at the Gallery

Fabien Castanier Gallery is excited to present a solo exhibition for French contemporary artist, RERO. The exhibition, entitled IMAGO, is on view March 26 through April 23.

Join the artist for the opening reception on Saturday, March 26th from 5-8pm.

This will be the fifth solo exhibition for RERO at the Castanier Gallery, marking ten years of collaboration that began in 2012 with his first solo outing in the U.S. Presenting a new body of mixed media work, RERO continues to transcend genres with his provocative text-based pieces.

IMAGO will expound the raw power of words set upon both society’s most humble and grand backdrops. While RERO’s medium varies to embolden the meaning behind his statements, at times rugged and industrial as poured concrete or filled with deep sentiment as resin covered found objects, for this exhibition he has chosen to conduct a philosophical snapshot of our current moment. Entrenched within a time of extreme change, the artist posits an alternative reality, one that speaks towards a more hopeful and attainable future.

  • Jan Kaláb Returns to Castanier Gallery

The gallery is excited to present a solo exhibition for Prague-based contemporary artist, Jan Kaláb. The exhibition, entitled Symmetry & Soul, is on view October 23 through November 20. The show will commence with an all-day opening reception on Saturday October 23rd, from 11am-8pm. This is the third solo exhibition for Jan Kaláb at the gallery, which will highlight new dynamic paintings on canvas.

    From the Artist…
In my recent body of work I investigate different types of symmetry and refractions of light. When I was a child, I was fascinated by looking into kaleidoscopes that created infinitely many shapes. Symmetry can have many forms, depending on how many axes the image reflects. The simplest is mirroring by one axis. All human and animal bodies are symmetric in this manner. Mirroring and reflections on more axes can be found in inorganic nature, like crystals. The most complex symmetrical object is a circle. I implemented colour gradients of the sky in different times of day and night into this optical illusion. In some cases, the effect is almost hypnotic, at other times the effect may be very reassuring. In this show there are some paintings assembled out of many smaller parts, which means the paintings are defragmented. I’m also showing three relief canvases. It is a special relief technique of a wooden frame with canvas stretched over it, creating perfect collapsed areas – besides colours, light and shadow come into play.

  • Solo Exhibition for Miami-based Artist, Jon Davis

Fabien Castanier Gallery is proud to present Brokedown Palace, a solo exhibition for contemporary Miami-based artist, Jon Davis. The exhibition is on view September 18 – October 16, and will begin with an all day opening reception.

Jon Davis presents his most recent body of work as an homage to the city he calls home. Throughout Brokedown Palace, images capturing “moments” of Miami are fractured, stratified, and presented through a renewed understanding of not only the space they represent, but as they currently exist within each seamless rendering. After undergoing a year-long distillation period, this most recent body of work expresses the culmination of Davis’s practice over the past 30 years.

Through the duration of his artistic career, Davis’s self-taught practice has created his distinctly unique visual language, pulling inspiration from the philosophical, and ensuing formal, evolution of the arts in the late twentieth century. Davis’s work can be understood as a personal rendition of ready-mades, as he transforms present happenings provided by his surroundings through each synthesized reality contained within panes of glass. In this, Davis uses skills of everyday life to reflect a higher creative culture.

  • Ed Broner Solo Exhibition Opens Dec 6

This is the first solo exhibition for Ed Broner at the gallery, featuring new drawings and paintings on canvas.

For Culture, Broner presents a body of work produced during the Covid-19 lockdown at his studio in Berlin. The paintings were executed based on a series of 300 drawing studies created during this tumultuous period. Recalling his earliest practice as an artist, these pieces are reminiscent of his old blackbook sketches from the 1980s. The paintings open a dialogue on a variety of subjects, all with a focus on the struggles and confrontations within our current societal climate. Greatly influenced by the media and the events occurring in 2020, Broner reveals a complex perspective on both the hope and despair of modern times.
